Gone to Ghana

Not gone yet….. September 3, 2008

Okay, so I’m not actually gone yet but I can’t think of a better title for my blog.  In fact, I feel very weird having a blog to begin with but this seems to be the best way to keep in touch while I’m away.  I’m most worried about what I’m going to be missing out on while I’m away so I hope you will keep me updated with all of your exciting news.

So, why am I going to Ghana? Officially, my title is as a Math and Science Teacher Trainer for the Jirapa/Lambussie region.  I will be there for about four and a half months, leaving this Sunday.  No I don’t really know exactly what I’ll be doing but I have been very impressed with Uniterra, the organization I am going with, and know that they have a great reputation for their development projects in a number of countries.  There are a LOT of unknowns right now, but that’s half the fun, right? I do know that I will be met at the airport, someone will be helping me make my way from Accra (the capital) to Jirapa (at least a 16 hour drive into the boonies) and that I will stay in a guest house for a couple of weeks.  After that, well, we’ll see:) I look forward to being able to tell you more soon.

  9. Hi Sandra,

I stumbled across your blog whilst searching for information on Jirapa; I hope you don’t mind the intrusion!!

My brother and I are travelling from the UK to Jirapa on 16th October where we’ll be staying for two months whilst working in St Joseph’s Orphanage – a placement which has been arranged through a small UK-based charity (www.freeduk.org).

We have very little information about Jirapa itself and so I was hoping I might be able to pick your brains if you have the time; I appreciate your access to the internet is probably very limited and that you’ll likely have far better things to do with your time than spend it answering my questions, so I promise I’ll be brief! Do you have an e-mail address I might be able to contact you on?
