What’s Your Favourite? November 19, 2008

If you were asked to pick a favourite appliance, what would you pick? I think if you asked me before coming here I would have said the dishwasher.  I hate doing the dishes at home and therefore that was my first big purchase after moving into my own home.  Here, though, the dishes are not a big deal at all even with fetching my own water from the cistern.  Maybe that is because there is no tv or trip to visit friends that the dishes are holding me from.  Sometimes doing the dishes is the highlight of my night!

The appliance I miss the most is the washing machine.  In India we were lucky to have a washing machine in the apartment and then hung our clothes to dry.  Here the plan was to wash all of my own clothes.  Well, I have finally broken down and asked for some help in that area.  So now, as part of my rent, the girls who work at the convent wash my clothes.  I tried.  I really did.  I just couldn’t keep up and don’t think I did a very good job of it either.  I still wash all of my own underwear and even that is a pain if you let it pile up for a couple of days.  What a luxury it will be to throw a whole pile of clothes in the machine and come back later to find them clean.  Wow!

Dryer. In Japan it drove me mental that I had to wait for my jeans to dry. A 2 to 3 day wait for my fave jeans was not cool… I also love fluffy sheets and warm sweaters from the dryer. Lulu waits at the dryer until I empty it and I have to make her “warm clothes capes” out of Gene’s shirts.
